- What State are you located? Every state has low income residents. so of course, each city and each state has to have a way to help those residents. otherwise, people would move to other states and cause a major crisis. to help you understand, here is an example: low imcome families can't afford basic rent. so the government made programs like section 8 and Housing Authorities. I hope that helps you to understand now to your question. since welfare to work is ANOTHER goverment created program. to help families get off of welfare they came across another problem. health insurance. sooo the goverment has another program for people who work but can't afford health insurance NY has Family Health Plus. CT has Husky. Pa has Blue Chip low cost insurance or free insurance IS offered to any person who does not qualify for goverment aid. all you need to do is call your local social servive dept. and make an appoint for health insurance. fill out the forms they give you and make sure you save you last four paystubs as proof of your income. The case worker will help you fill out the forms if you need help. If you meet their guidelines. CONGRATZ ! If you make too much money "according to their guidelines. no need to worry Simply ask for low income insurance company names. explain what you do for a living by this time your case worker should know and will give you names and even numbers to direct you. MAKE SURE YOU GET AND SAVE the letter that social services WILL send you IF you are indeed DENIED. other insurance companies will accept your application when they see your denial letter from the social services office. that letter will guarantee you for low cost or free health insurance from an out side insurance. I'm a school bus driver. and I'm a single mom their Dad is never around so I needed a job that is flexible for my family. I earn good to support my family but not enough to get health insurance. and since I only work part time. health insurance is not offered. I did exactly what I'm suggesting you do. and my family has health insurance. BTW, these steps work even if you don't have kids. oh and what's great is that there are places that can help you get not only insurnace but food stamps. I'm not saying you should out the government. but if you can't afford health insurance. you probably need help with food too. go to your local food pantries and depending where you live. one will help you with food and sometimes they have posted on their walls ALL types of help you can get. also homeless shelters help so much. they know the ins and outs of help. if you do have kids. the school counselors are now trained to help low income families get all types of help. and the schools now have grants for students who need gl es but don't have insurance. it's most likely called "gift of sight" program well I can't remember more. but I hope this helps. we'll lift you in prayer
